Bitcraze formed in 2011 to fund the development and production of the Crazyflie Quadcopter kit. The founders aimed to create a unique micro quadcopter and provide an open-source platform for developers. The project began in 2009 as a development effort within the Swedish consulting company Epsilon AB. Three embedded systems engineers from Sweden envisioned a small indoor flying device suited for Scandinavia’s cold weather.

The Crazyflie Quadcopter started as a simple concept: a flying electronic board. The team designed a device with minimal mechanical parts, creating the micro-scale Crazyflie. They used the printed circuit board as the main frame and attached the motors directly to it.

Crazyflie was born—and became the world’s smallest quadcopter at the time.

Crazyflie Quadcopter Overview

The Crazyflie 2.1 is Bitcraze’s versatile open-source flying development platform. It weighs only 27 grams and fits easily in your hand. Crazyflie 2.1 combines long-range, low-latency radio with Bluetooth LE for flexible control options.

Users can download the app and fly with a mobile device. Alternatively, they can connect Crazyradio 2.0 or Crazyradio PA to control it via computer and game controller.

The latest Crazyflie platform delivers better flight performance, greater durability, and improved radio. Together with extensive software and deck expansions, it suits education, research, and drone swarming applications.
