Pour Point is measured by two PT100 detection probes placed on the surface of the product, and a mechanical moving arm brings the test jar to a horizontal position.
For Petroleum Products, the cloud point and pour point of a petroleum product are indices of the lowest temperature of its utility for certain applications. The specimen is cooled at a specified rate and examined periodically.
The highest temperature at which a cloud is first observed at the bottom of the test jar is recorded as the cloud point. The lowest temperature at which movement of the specimen is observed is recorded as the pour point.
The cloud point detection system provides automated sample testing with the accuracy and repeatability in accordance with ASTM D2500, D5771, D5772, D5773 and related international test methods. In addition, the sophisticated dynamic measuring system emits a light pulse every 1°C.
This pulse comes from a coaxial fibre optic cable positioned above the test sample. The light pulse is reflected off the silver bottom of the test jar and onto to an optical sensor.
The advanced software package analyses the response of the light pulse. Furthermore, the initial appearance of crystallisation is monitored by light scattering. As a result, this process signifies the cloud point of the sample.
Clear and transparent oils are readily measured by the detection system, this is regardless of the sample colour.
The pour point detection system automates sample testing with accuracy and repeatability per ASTM and international methods. The system removes the sample from the cooling jacket at 3 °C intervals.
Next, the system tilts the sample to a 90° angle as specified. This sequence continues until the sample shows no flow.
When tilted, the cold sample contacts two PT100 probes above the liquid surface. The probe contact confirms sample flow detection. The system then returns the test jar to the cooling jacket. Afterwards, the system repeats sampling until no flow occurs for five seconds.
The system reports the pour point at 3 °C above the no-flow temperature.
The analysers operate as standalone systems with an integrated panel PC. The advanced software controls testing, monitoring, and data processing.
A 6.4-inch TFT touchscreen displays real-time graphs and parameters. The display supports 640 × 480 resolution with 262K colours.
The software records data in Microsoft® Excel-compatible file formats. Additionally, the software monitors analyser performance and component operation. Key components include solenoid valves, cooling systems, and pressure sensors. A PT100 Class A platinum resistance temperature probe ensures accurate measurement.
The systems offer one-stage cooling down to −40 °C. Alternatively, two-stage cooling achieves temperatures as low as −80 °C.
The direct cooling system uses integrated, CFC-free motors and compressors. This design eliminates the need for solvent-based cooling baths. The system reaches −80 °C in approximately 15 minutes. Moreover, it consumes less electricity than conventional cooling systems.
Rapid, consistent cooling delivers highly repeatable and reproducible test results.
Automated sample cooling and physical property measurement systems – configured with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 test positions. At each position, you can use one of five possible analytical heads: cloud point, pour point, cloud & pour point, cold filter plugging point and freezing point.
Standard and customised multiple configuration systems are readily available.
