The sample is blown with a controlled volume of air at different specified temperatures. The resultant foam is measured at the end of each aeration period and at different intervals afterwards.
The Koehler Instrument K43093 performs two tests at 75 °F and two tests at 200 °F. The unit includes two 12 × 18-inch constant-temperature baths. Each bath contains 1000 mL test cylinders, certified diffusers, air delivery tubes, and 94 mL/min flowmeters.
The baths use microprocessor temperature controls, copper immersion heaters, and 1/20 hp circulation stirrers. These components maintain temperature uniformity within ±1 °F.
First, the microprocessor PID controller rapidly stabilises temperature without overshoot. Next, the over-temperature circuit automatically interrupts power if the bath exceeds the programmed limit. Finally, dual LED displays clearly indicate both actual and setpoint temperatures in °C or °F.
Quick-locking cams secure test cylinders in the bath cover assembly, and a separate stainless steel rack supports cylinders after removal.
To begin with, the 24 °C bath includes coils that cool exit air from high-temperature cylinders. Subsequently, the system directs the cooled air to a volume meter. Furthermore, a separate coil circulates cooling water or refrigerant. However, the system activates this function only when the ambient temperature exceeds the test temperature.
NOTE: Federal Test Method 791-3213 Aircraft Lubricants Test – Employs more severe conditions, smaller sample, increased air flow, and longer aeration period to test the foaming characteristics of aircraft-turbine lubricants.
