During the procedure, the system immerses a steel specimen in heated oil and water. Meanwhile, the apparatus continuously stirs the mixture throughout the test period.

After testing, the operator then examines the specimen for signs of rust.

  • Specifically, ASTM D665 uses a vertical specimen configuration.
  • In contrast, ASTM D3603 evaluates both horizontal and vertical test surfaces.

For testing, the constant-temperature bath performs characteristic measurements for rust prevention. At the same time, integrated stirrers mix the samples at 1000 rpm. In addition, the bath maintains temperature stability within ±0.5 °C.

To ensure compliance, the design immerses beakers at ASTM-specified depths. Furthermore, microprocessor PID control stabilises temperature rapidly without overshoot.

Dual LED displays clearly show actual and setpoint temperatures in °C or °F. For safety, an over-temperature circuit automatically shuts off power if limits are exceeded. Optionally, RS232 communication and ramp-to-set control enhance system functionality.

Mechanically, stainless steel paddles operate using a ball-bearing motor and pulley drive system. As needed, operators raise or lower the paddles to insert sample beakers.

Additionally, the system includes test specimens, holders, and beaker covers. The stainless steel bath also incorporates a perforated support shelf for beakers. Moreover, a two-position cover plate supports both ASTM D665 and D3603 methods.

Finally, a durable polyester drive belt improves reliability, while a removable steel guard protects drive components. Stainless steel and chemical-resistant finishes further protect all exterior surfaces.
